Guelph, ON: Throughout this year, across Canada, gravesites have been ‘discovered’ on the land where a Residential School once stood or still stands. On September 30th we commemorate Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters. Earlier this year, the government passed legislation to make September 30th a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

LJ Turtle Aromatherapy, specializing in handcrafted aromatherapy diffuser jewelry and accessories, is holding a fundraiser in support of the Woodland Cultural Centre’s ’Save the Evidence’ campaign.

The Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School in Brantford is an example of one of very few Residential Schools still standing in Canada. It operated from 1828 to 1970 and served as a ‘boarding school’ for First Nations children from Six Nations, as well as other communities throughout Ontario and Quebec. After closing in 1970, it reopened in 1972 as the Woodland Cultural Centre, a non-profit organization that serves to preserve and promote First Nations culture and heritage. ‘Save the Evidence’ is a campaign to raise awareness and support for the restoration of the former Residential School, and to develop the building into an Interpreted Historic Site and Educational Resource.

Lisa Byers, founder of LJ Turtle Aromatherapy, based in Guelph, Ontario, is a Certified Aromatherapy Health Professional, and plans to fundraise $10,000 for the ‘Save the Evidence’ campaign by selling two aromatherapy diffuser products:

Aromatherapy Diffuser Felted Acorns $7.50 each or 6 for $30

Currently, Acorns and Bracelets may be purchased online at ljturtle.ca; or from Lisa directly on October 16th, at the Guelph Farmers’ Market; and on October 30th, at the Aberfoyle Farmers’ Market.  Also, acorns will soon be available from the gift shop at the Guelph Civic Museum.  The fundraiser will run until the end of December.
