History of amethyst
As many of you know, February's birthstone is the amethyst. It is said that amethyst can help one to alter old patterns of thought and behavior, and to forgive oneself for past mistakes. It has been valued for centuries in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. The ancient Greeks believed it had powerful healing properties where it was used to cure nervous disorders and insomnia. And today amethyst is thought to have healing powers that can ease mind and body, calm anxious thoughts or quell insomnia.
How did amethyst get its name?Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz, specifically of the mineral species quartz (SiO2). It is the name of the violet-to-pink gemstone mined from it. The word amethyst comes from the Greek "amethystos", meaning "not drunk," because when wine was poured into a vessel carved out of amethyst, the vessel remained undiminished in volume. They believed this gem could prevent drunkenness.
Amethyst is one of the oldest stones known to humankind. Its origins can be traced back to ancient Egypt where it was used for jewelry and burial objects. The Greeks and Romans also valued amethyst for its healing properties and believed it could guard against drunkenness. It was also thought to help with insomnia, nightmares and anxiety disorders.
Amethyst is a type of quartz, and like all quartz crystal, it can be used to amplify energy, spirituality, and healing. It is also known as “the stone of spirituality” and helps you to connect with your higher self.
